This one we are about to visit is the first national park in Sardinia, the only one in Italy consisting of the whole territory of a single municipality. There Mediterranean bush that welcomes us hides precious treasures of both marine and terrestrial fauna, with many endemic species, rare and to be protected.

The La Maddalena National Park was established in 1994 but in reality its managing body is officially invested with its role by a decree law of 1996, it is a geomarine park which extends without being fussy, both on land and sea for a total of about 18,000 hectares. Specifically, there are 5,134 hectares of land surface and 13,000 hectares of sea surface, with 180 km of coastline to be admired.

La Maddalena Archipelago National Park: flora
Needless to say, the flora of the La Maddalena National Park, the one we find on the islands is strongly influenced by the presence of the wind but also of the strong sun which creates an arid climate. The Mediterranean scrub predominates, and in it the most present plants are juniper, strawberry tree, phillyrea, mastic, myrtle, heather, calicotome, cistus and euphorbia.
However, there is no need to be bored in La Maddalena National Park because going down towards the coast, the vegetation becomes lower, it is no longer a "scrub" but a garrigue. The fact is that in this area that is more marine than terrestrial, there are still many exclusive or rare endemic species to look for and know.
Particular are also plant assemblies such as the low formations of Artemisia densiflora in Razzoli, a unique spectacle, offered only by La Maddalena National Park as well as i ginepreti to Juniperus phoenicea of Spargi, Caprera, Budelli, Santa Maria.
La Maddalena Archipelago National Park: terrestrial fauna
The La Maddalena National Park it is known to be among the most important areas for vertebrate fauna - Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds, Mammals - but in particular we must focus on birds, on the marine nesting ones that make a fixed stop. In particular, in fact, this precious gathering of small islands located between Sardinia and Corsica is an important stop for the trans-Saharan migratory birds.
Among the breeding species in the La Maddalena National Park we also find the Corsican gull which is the only species of endemic gull in the Mediterranean, and then there is also the Mediterranean subspecies of the Shag. Also in these areas it should be noted the presence of the only population of the common tern in the Mediterranean Sea, contrary to what the name seems to say, this bird is uncommon, but even of international importance.
All other species we find in the La Maddalena Archipelago National Park except the Herring gull they are protected as "wild birds". In addition to the animals with wings, the reptiles we can meet also deserve a few lines, many belong to endemic species of the Sardinian-Corsican system or of those threatened worldwide. Less brilliant note the presence of wild boars which, as often happens, can create some problems.
