How to raise pigs outdoors: how to start a pig farm for self-consumption. Permits from the ASL and the Municipality. Nutrition and advice on the ideal shelter and space needed.

Already in the article entitled "raising pigs at home" I made it clear that it is not possibleraise pigsin a small courtyard or in an excessively small garden. Those who live in the open countryside can evaluate the hypothesis ofraise pigs outdoorsexploiting the hybrids and the most suitable breeds for a breeding of this kind.

Those with a tighter space can decide tobuild a small pigstyintended forbreeding of pigs for self-consumption. A fenced accommodation of about 20 square meters will be enough to raise a couple of pigs. In this context, a covered shelter must be set up, in masonry, to allow pigs to shelter. A closed shelter (for the ASL can also be built with a wooden ark but I do not recommend it) should be about 4 square meters in the case of 2 pigs or 6 square meters if you want to raise three pigs. I do not recommend raising a single pig: Pigs can be considered pets, and a single pig could suffer from loneliness and become stressed.

The area intended for pigs can then be fenced with an electrified net or with a sturdy fence.

The area intended forgrazing of the animalmust have a manger and a drinking trough. To make them you can use old sinks or buy special basins. The pig constantly needs clean water therefore, inbuild the pigsty, keep in mind that the water supply must get there to avoid acome and gowith buckets full of water.

After preparing itvital spacefor the little onedomestic pig farming, you can contact the ASL (see the paragraph dedicated to permits) and choose the breed of pig you prefer. In summary it is necessary:

  • A covered shelter, in masonry and with a sloping floor.
  • Straw / hay for the litter.
  • Feeder and drinking trough.
  • An area intended for grazing.
  • A well-defined perimeter with a very resistant fence or electrified network.

In the article on how to raise pigs at home, I explained, in detail, the various stages of growth and development of the animal. Above all, I have provided you with details on the nutrition to be given to the pig which varies with growth. There is also room for food leftovers, rotten fruit, old vegetables and especially dry bread in the diet.

Pigs must be fed thoughtfully: only an adult pig can be fed complex mixtures. Younger pigs do not have a developed digestive system and therefore the feeding must take place with specific mixtures but ... fear not, they are not expensive at all!

To start breeding, choose apig14-18 weeks. Avoid choosing larger pigs especially if they come from intensive farming.

A 14 - 18 week old pig generally weighs around 30 - 35 kg.

When to start raising pigs?

March is the perfect month, you can buy pigs born in the previous autumn which, by early spring, will have reached an ideal average weight of 30 - 35 kg.

Breeding pigs in the garden, permits

L'pig farm for self-consumption it is possible and does not require special permits: just contact the local ASL and, after an inspection by a veterinarian, have the stable number released.

The only permits needed, if there is no shelter, are those for the preparation and construction of a small brick stable. In some municipalities in Italy, a permit is also required to set up an electricity grid for animals. In this context, it will not be necessary to contact the ASL but to the technical office of the Municipality of Residence.

The ASL must be requested for the stable number and then the purchase of the animal must be communicated. Simultaneously with the arrival of the pig for domestic breeding, you must register with the local ASL by sending the purchase documents of the garment.

It is important to avoid setting up the pigsty near perimeter walls or borders with the neighbor. The pigsty will undoubtedly be a source of bad smells, although you can clean the small stable every day, the bad smell is inevitable.
